USED BELLS

When trying to decide whether to buy used bells or new bells, there are several things to consider. As with everything, there are pros and cons to using either. Many times, a used bell is chosen for use because it has sentimental or historical value or some connection to the building in which it will be placed . Maybe it was rescued from a church that had burned, a church that previously sat on the site of a church that is being built to replace an old church, or perhaps it was donated by a member of the congregation, but the most common reason for choosing a used bell over a new bell is that they tend to be less expensive. The majority of used bells on the market are well over 100 years old. They are still perfectly intact and sound great, however, they will most likely have an inscription cast into the bell with the name of a previous benefactor or the name of the church or building in which it previously resided. All used bells have a history, though its history may not be known. Used bells usually have a weathered look to them, a green patina that results from years of having sat outdoors in the wind, the rain and the snow. Used bells are like used cars in the sense that they are not all readily available in the size you want when you want it. The size of a bell dictates the pitch or tone of the bell, and this is key when choosing bells to play Westminster Chimes for instance. If you are interested in buying one or more used bells, let us know and we will work with you to find what you need.. If you are not sure, we can help by recommending combinations, also know as peals or a single bell that fits the location your bell will be placed. If you really want to be adventurous, you can assemble a carillon which is a combination of a minimum of 23 strategically chosen bells for the purpose of playing music using the bells.

NEW BELLS

New bells, though they tend to be more expensive, have a lot of redeeming qualities. You can start with a blank slate. You choose the size of the bell, the quantity of bells and the inscription to be cast into the bell and viola, you get a beautiful, shiny bronze bell, custom made to your exact specifications. A downside to choosing new bells is the 6 to 9 month lead time from the manufacturer. Though this is not convenient, it is well worth it and barring a catastrophe, the bells will be around a lot longer than we will. This is very attractive to potential benefactors who wish to have their name cast into the bell. S F Glaser, Inc. is proud to offer for sale, new cast bronze bells from the Paccard Bell Foundry in Annecy France. Paccard is considered to be one of the finest bell foundries in the world.

Pros

  • Typically less expensive than new bells
  • Used bells tend to have an antique green patina or weathered look
  • Many used bells come with the original yoke, clapper, A stand and bell wheel (these are hard to find today.
  • Can be restored to a beautiful antique bronze bell

Cons

  • Limited to used bells available (may be hard to find)
  • May be difficult to find a combination of used bells needed for peals or Westminster Chimes etc.
  • Usually has an inscription cast into the bell
  • Bells may need to be shipped from different locations

NEW BELLS

PROS

  • Are custom made to you specifications so there ore no availability issues
  • New cast bells have a bright, shiny factory bronze finish
  • Have the option of having an inscription cast into the bell
  • New bells are tuned on a rather large lathe to an exact tone or pitch prior to shipping

CONS

  • Typically more expensive
  • Longer lead time (6-9 months)
  • Shipped from overseas (tariff will be assessed)

ALL BELLS

  • All bells can be automated regardless of whether they are new of used
  • All bells are heavy (a typical church bell can weigh up to 4,000 pounds
